The Boyd Arthurs Middle School 8th Grade Social Studies Department and members of the local VFW and VFW Auxiliary Post 1888 celebrated the annual Patriot’s Pen essay competition finalist and winners on Thursday, November 7. Twenty students were selected from almost two hundred entries as finalists for the top prize of $200 and the chance to represent the city of Trenton at the VFW District Finals in January.

Conducted nationwide, the Patriot’s Pen youth essay competition is sponsored by the VFW and gives students an opportunity to write essays expressing their views on an annual patriotic theme. Last year, more than 120,000 students participated in this contest nationwide. This year’s theme was “What Makes America Great”. Students were asked to write 300-400 words expressing their feelings as to what makes America great. Allison Marshall was the first place winner, with Hannah Wells taking second, and Ahmed Alkuhali in third place.

This year’s top 20 finalists were: Owen Adkins, Ahmed Alkuhali, Emma Burger, Sarah Champagne, Clare Hodge, R.J. Howey, Delaney King, Allison Marshall, Aiden McKiney, Annika Segedi, Aleah Tanguay, Doug Tank, Zach Taylor, Maria Urbina, Maya Vines, Allison Warlick, Hannah Wells, Autumn White, London Williams, Ashley Wright.
